Op-ed: Russia-Ukraine War – “The best thing Africans can do for now is to abstain”

By Hamza Koroma

How did your country vote at the UN’s resolution against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine?

28 African nations voted in favour and called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops in Ukraine. Others abstained, voted against or didn’t record a vote.

Now my take: (Note: Unpopular Opinion)

The wise ones abstained. How I wish my country is in that group. To me, Russia has a better human rights record in Africa than the European countries who hypocritically seek to punish Russia for trying at what they are masters in. I don’t support the atrocities, I am totally against crimes against humanity and war crimes.

These results here show us that all the African countries that have been voted in favour of the US still didn’t forget their colonial period mindset but I’m not blaming any country for their choices.

As a Sierra Leonean who is against any form of invasion, they lost my sympathy when my African brothers and sisters were discriminated against.

I’m particularly interested in Eritrea’s decision.

What could have exactly motivated them to vote against the withdrawal of Russian troops in Ukraine? I’m sure my country Sierra Leone voted under duress as someone said in the comment section.

Now let’s forget about my country and imagine Libya also voting in favour of sanctioning Russia after all the destruction brought upon them by the west.

This shows that the West control many countries in Africa including war-torn countries.

All I’m seeing here in the west, trying to drag Africa into their conflict.

Do we matter, are we humans to them?
Do our votes count in the general assembly?

Are we permanent members?
Is UN all about equity?

The best thing Africans can do for now is to abstain.

We all know where the hearts and minds of Africans are.

This is an invasion but it doesn’t mean that Africans approve of the suffering of Ukraine!

Do our African leaders speak at their AU summits?

Look at the way Europe and US came together, to work in protecting Ukraine.

Will our leaders be able to do something similar?

Someone asked; what was the contribution and participation of the AU during the wars in Libya, Somalia and other countries apart from accepting refugees?

I’m just asking to find out how prepared our leaders are in preventing and solving such situations. Imagine this war happening in Africa.

Will our leaders be able to handle it, or they will leave it to the US to handle. Africa, oh! Mama Africa! When!
