Sierra Leonean forward, Mohamed Buya Turay has signed a 3.5 years contract with Malmö FF, the most successful football club in Swedish football history.
The 27-year-old Sierra Leonean forward has been one of the best Sierra Leonean players for the past three seasons. In the 2019/2020 season, Mohamed Buya Turay became the first Sierra Leonean footballer to win a golden boot in Europe after netting 15 top-flight league goals for Swedish top-tier side Djurgårdens IF. Turay’s goals helped Djurgårdens IF win the Swedish Allsvenskan Championship.
It feels good to have signed for Malmö FF which is a big club in Sweden and I am also proud of the trust the club has shown me. I want to say hello to all MFF supporters that I am here to make a difference – Mohamed Buya Turay speaking on his transfer to Malmö FF
After helping Djurgårdens IF clinched the Swedish Championship in 2020, Buya Turay decided to take a new path in the Asian football league where he signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with Chinese top-tier side Hebei China Fortune. His move to Malmö FF could be a win for the club and perhaps a slap on the face of Djurgården IF, a top rival of Malmö FF. Buya’s impressive goal-scoring record in Sweden put him in a comfortable position to become the club’s main guy. He has scored 32 goals and 12 assists in 65 Allsvenskan matches so far during his career.
Buya not playable – waiting for a work permit, says Malmo head coach
Milos Milojevic, Malmo FF head coach tells SportExpressen that Buya would not be in the lineup tomorrow in the match against Sirius as the player currently awaits to receive his work permit. The coach went on to pour praise on the player and expresses his admiration for Buya. Coach Milojevic told SportExpressen that “He (Buya) is a fast and direct player who was goal king last time he was in Sweden. He was the most important piece of the puzzle in Djurgården’s success. I hope he can get ready quickly, he is waiting for his work permit. I think it goes faster for elite athletes.”
With strikers like Isaac Kiese Thelin and Ola Toivonen in the Malmo squad, Milojevic can change to a two-man attack to bring in Buya Turay – he admits. “Yes, it can be so. But it is also possible that we want speed on the edge and then play Buya and Joseph (Ceesay) there. But we change a little direction now to become a press team, we want a pressing striker who can put the first press,” says Milojevic.
“It feels really good to get Buya to MFF,” says Malmo FF sports manager, Andreas Georgeson
“It feels really good to get Buya to MFF. A smart player who mixes hard work with finesse on the football field. His greatest strengths are in the press game, the deep lead game and the goal scorer and we believe that will strengthen the team in the short and long term,” he told reporters.
