Uganda Overtakes Ethiopia to Become Africa’s Top Coffee Exporter

Uganda has officially surpassed Ethiopia to become the continent’s leading coffee exporter, according to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA).

Data from May 2025 shows that Uganda exported a record 47,606.7 tonnes of coffee, equivalent to 793,445 60-kilogram bags, raking in $243.9 million in revenue.

This not only marks a 43.6% increase in volume compared to May 2024 but also positions Uganda ahead of Ethiopia, which exported 43,481 tonnes during the same period.

Over the 12-month period from June 2024 to May 2025, Uganda shipped a total of 7.43 million bags, generating $2.09 billion in earnings.

“This achievement is a testament to Uganda’s growing capacity in coffee production, export efficiency, and market reach,” said Emmanuel Iyamulemye, Managing Director of UCDA.

Italy remains the largest buyer, importing 39% of Uganda’s coffee exports in May.

The European Union collectively took in 67%, followed by Africa (18%) and Asia (13%).

Uganda’s rise is largely driven by Robusta coffee, which is known for its higher yield and caffeine content.

While Ethiopia is world-renowned for its premium Arabica beans, Uganda’s ability to scale its Robusta production has given it a commercial edge, particularly in volume-based trade.

Industry experts note that while Uganda is now leading in volume, Ethiopia still commands prestige in global specialty markets due to the high quality and flavor complexity of its Arabica varieties.
