From Civil Engineering to Beauty Queen: Ruth Silma’s Inspiring Journey

Many young people in Sierra Leone are diving into the world of entrepreneurship and business. Ruth Silma is a young entrepreneur who finally achieved her dreams of opening a salon and fashion spot. Her story is one of grit, consistency, and passion.

Princess Ruth Silma is the CEO of Sil’s Beauty Parlor whose passion for fashion and creativity began at an early age. “Since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to be a fashion queen. I was fascinated with being beautiful and I loved makeup and the different range of hairstyles,” Ruth explained in an exclusive with The African Dream.

However, she was first tasked by her parents to balance that dream with her course of study in Civil Engineering at Fourah Bay College. As a student, Ruth revealed that there were many moments where she was overwhelmed with the complex study workload tied to her studies and her promising plans for her salon. “I reminded myself that both my education and dream were important pieces of the bigger picture. In fact my civil engineering training gave me valuable skills in planning, problem-solving, and project management that I have been able to utilize directly to build and run my salon,” Ruth Silma detailed.

After Ruth graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honors in Civil Engineering, she officially opened Sil’s Beauty Parlor on the 14th of September, finally fulfilling her dream. The establishment offers vast services of beautification ranging from manicure and pedicure, gel nails, hair installation, hair washing and updo styling, braiding, barbing services, makeup services, and many more. “What sets us apart from other salons is the passion behind everything we do. Every client who walks through our door is treated with respect, attention, and a genuine desire to make them look and feel their absolute best. Our prices are customer-friendly matching modern techniques,” she happily explained.

Ruth revealed that customer satisfaction has been the hallmark of her journey. She envisages seeing Sil’s Beauty Parlor growing into one of the most trusted and respected beauty destinations in the country. “I want it to be more than just a place for hair and makeup. I’m working towards expansion, a skilled empower team, beauty academy or training program, modern tools, and techniques.”

Don’t let fear stop you from starting. You don’t need it all figured out – just begin. I started with vision and determination. Start small, believe in yourself, grow through the struggle. You are enough. Go for it, baby girl. Build it. Own it. Shine.
