Fourah Bay College Lecturer and siblings Establishes a foundation Named After Their Late Mother To Empower Hard Working Students In Sierra Leone

The Mamie Mariama Justice Ganawa Education Foundation (MaMJGEF) is a first-of-its-kind organization that primarily caters to the less privileged and hard-working Sierra Leonean students to acquire high-quality education and to ensure high standards in the educational system in Sierra Leone. The leading brain behind this initiative is renowned Fourah Bay College lecturer Mohamed Ibrahim Justice Ganawah.

“The foundation was established on the legacy of the late Mamie Mariama Ganawah,” Mr. Ganawah hinted at the influence of his bereaved mother on The African Dream. Similar to many single parents, Mamie Ganawah faced a great ordeal of financing her children’s education. She exhibited great passion and show of strength in the pursuit of high-quality education. Despite the challenges, Mamie Ganawah was successful in impacting her children and they in turn are impacting society. The idea of crowdfunding was originally conceived by her and that is a pillar of the MaMJGEF foundation.

The Foundation’s Logo and its Motto

The vision of the Mamie Mariama Justice Ganawah Education Foundation (MaMJGEF) is to eradicate the visible problems of illiteracy in Sierra Leone by creating platforms that ensure that education is inclusive for everyone. The foundation is committed to providing support to enhance high-quality education to those who are faced with difficulties in furthering their education strides.

A part of the foundation’s mission statement is to support quality education processes at the ward, constituency, district, and national level by uniting people of different religions, regions, and tribes in a habitable educational environment that could foster unity and social cohesion. In a simplified sense, MaMJGEF is using education to bring people together.

WHAT ARE THE FOUR STRATEGIC PILLARS OF MaMJGEF?

  1. Sustainability and Scalability of the Education for life Model – MaMJGEF has created a model to render help to the less privileged and underserved to acquire high-quality education and education-related services that are efficient, effective, and self-sustaining in all the communities in Sierra Leone.
  2. Quality Education – The foundation is not only catering for the present but also bears the future in mind. They seek to provide high-quality education to less privileged children in the country to optimize their capabilities while equipping them for future contributions to society.
  3. Organisational Financial Sustainability – So, for these wonderful initiatives to come to fruition, a financial base is important. Through crowdfunding, the organization will utilize the proceeds to carry out its activities.
  4. Organizational Structure and Governance – MaMJGEF shall establish structures, systems, policies, and procedures to support efficient, effective, and compliant operations at the Board and management levels.

CROWDFUNDING

Crowdfunding is the use of small amounts of capital from a large number of individuals to finance a new business venture. The foundation caters for two main categories of subscribers i.e. National and International. Each of these is further divided into four (4) subcategories with a monthly subscription. The National Category: Bronze Le40, Silver Le50, Gold Le100, Platinum Le200. Those in the diaspora can go for the International Category: Bronze $25, Silver $35, Gold $50, and Platinum $100.

Sierra Leone is one of the countries with the highest illiteracy rates in the world. According to the New Education Policy for Sierra Leone, about 69.3% of the male population is illiterate, while 80% of the female population is illiterate. The unequal access to education has over the years been a problem to the extent that it is now a flagship program of the country’s government. A foundation like MaMJGEF can excellently complement government’s efforts while proffering innovative ways to promote literacy standards. It is highly necessary and beneficial for one to be part of the foundation as it is a step in contributing to solving a dire national problem.
