Meet Dr Angela Tabiri – Remarkable Mathematician and PhD holder in Mathematics From Ghana

Angela Tabiri

Dr Angela Ankomaah Tabiri is a Ghanaian quantum algebra researcher, PhD holder in Mathematics, and Founder of Femafricmaths, an organization that aims at promoting female African mathematicians.

She was born in 1990 in Accra, Ghana. Dr Tabiri graduated from Anum Memorial School at Ashaiman Middle East in Accra and then studied business at Accra’s Girls Senior High School. She is fluent in Twi (Akan Kasa) as well as English,

In 2011, at the age of 21, she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Ghana. She went on to earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics.

In 2014, Dr Tabiri obtained a Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences from the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS).

Dr Tabiri, in 2015, received a postgraduate diploma from the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, which Pakistani Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam founded.

In June 2019, Dr Tabiri graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from the School of Mathematics and Statistics College of Science of the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2019, where she was awarded a Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship.

Her doctoral dissertation was Quantum Group Actions on Singular Plane Curves.

She was an AIMS-Google AI Postdoctoral Fellow at AIMS-Ghana.

After completing her doctorate, in 2020, she returned to her native Ghana to support the teaching and learning of mathematics.

As a role model to girls and women in Ghana, Dr Tabiri said young girls and women in Africa should believe in themselves and find mentors who believe in their dreams.

Dream beyond your surroundings. Believe in your dream and find mentors who believe in this dream. These mentors will nurture and support you. Then, take action to transform your dreams into reality – said Dr Angela Tabiri.

She also instructed courses in mathematics for machine learning in the AMMI programme and linear algebra in the MSc programme. Her areas of interest in study are quantum groups, quantum homogeneous spaces, and noncommutative algebra.

Her NGO, Femafricmaths is an NGO that supports African women in mathematics, and its creator is Dr. Tabiri.

Dr Tabiri organised the inaugural scientific Slam in 2019 in collaboration with Femafricmaths, a scientific communication event that makes scientists’ pertinent research enjoyable in Ghana.

In 2021, Dr. Angela Ankomaah Tabiri, a Board Member with Kente Connect (improvement in digital literacy in rural Africa), conducted a seminar for PiWORKS at AIMS Ghana and led Femafricmaths. She continues to research, teach and encourage youths, especially girls, to engage in maths, science, and technology.
