Meet Isaiah Gyamfi – The 2-year-old Ghanaian Math Genius Who Taught Himself How To Speak Japanese

Isaiah Gyamfi is a Ghanaian child prodigy who received international attention and grew popular after it was revealed that he can read, write, and count in English, Spanish, French, and Twi and solve multiplication and subtraction math problems at just two years old. Gyamfi can also solve complex calculus and arithmetic problems.

Isaiah Gyamfi, now 3+, started showing extraordinary intelligence at the age of five months. Isaiah’s mother, Jazelle, who hails from South West London, disclosed to the Mirror that he enjoys learning from videos on YouTube. One day, she decided to put on a video about Japanese numbers. Jazelle said Isaiah listened to the video repeatedly until he could recite the numbers back to back. He learned to count up to 40 in Japanese by himself in just less than 24 hours. She explained “One day Isaiah was watching a phonic video on my phone on YouTube, he scrolled to the videos at the bottom and clicked on a Japanese numeracy video. He listened to it once and was fixated. He asked to watch it again, then before I knew it he would recite the numbers back to back.”

At 11 months Isaiah Gyamfi has taught himself how to count in Japanese.

Jazelle is an early childhood education teacher based in London. Ever since Isaiah was little, she had already started creating a learning environment conducive to him. She placed numeracy and literacy flashcards in their living room so Isaiah could learn through visuals. Months passed by and Isaiah had always been surprising both his parents when he pointed out the correct letters and eventually sound them out using phonics. He also practiced writing numbers and solving Math problems by himself.

Jazelle also noticed that her son enjoys different languages. Therefore, she showed him a video in Spanish and gave him Spanish flashcards. He now speaks several languages such as English, Spanish, French, Italian, Twi, Yoruba, and Japanese. Jazelle added in the interview that “At nursery, Isaiah has an Italian teacher and a French teacher. And thankfully, they understand that when he’s there he often just wants to focus on numbers, learning new words and new languages which he’s obsessed with.”

Proud mum Jazelle with Isaiah

Isaiah Gyamfi is a big fan of numbers and enjoys practising them alone in his quiet corner. He has whiteboards and pens to practise writing numbers every day. Isaiah became an internet sensation after her mum began sharing videos on an Instagram account for Isaiah.

Jazelle began to capture Isaiah’s learning achievements and share videos in an Instagram account for Isaiah. Several people are amazed at how Isaiah is enjoying learning, as evident in the videos.
