Ethiopia sets to export electricity to South Sudan

Ethiopia

Ethiopia plans to export electricity to South Sudan in order to assist in the resolution of the country’s power crisis and to promote regional integration.

Ethiopia intends to send 100 megawatts of electricity to South Sudan. Walta, Addis Ababa, May 6, 2022 — According to the Ethiopian Electric Power, Ethiopia has promised to export 100 MW of electric power to South Sudan over the next three years, eventually quadrupling the aim.

The authorities, including Peter Marcello, South Sudan’s Minister of Energy and Dams, and senior officials from Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance, signed a memorandum of understanding in Addis Ababa.

The power export will begin with 100 megawatts in the first phase, increasing to 400 megawatts in the following batches, according to the negotiated parameters.

While the agreement benefits South Sudan by covering its electricity demands, it is seen as a win-win for both countries because Ethiopia would share in the cash generated.

Following the substantial production capacity of the Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was just launched, industry experts predict that Ethiopia will become a major power centre, servicing additional African countries, particularly its neighbours.
