Ifeoma Okoli’s life took an unexpected turn when she was just 8 years old. Her mother noticed that she was writing above the margin in her notebooks, a telltale sign of failing eyesight. It was then that Ifeoma’s battle with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, began.
As her eyesight continued to deteriorate, Ifeoma faced countless challenges. She had to drop out of school at the start of her final examination in secondary school. It seemed like her dreams of pursuing higher education were shattered.
However, Ifeoma’s indomitable spirit refused to be defeated. With the assistance of a cloistered nun enrolled at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Obudu, Cross River State, she was able to continue her studies. Equipped with the necessary skills to pursue her academic dreams, Ifeoma set her sights on achieving the highest level of education possible.
And so began her extraordinary journey towards a PhD. Ifeoma’s determination and perseverance propelled her through the challenges that came her way. She overcame accessibility barriers, navigated through a predominantly sighted academic world, and proved that her blindness was never a hindrance to her intellectual capabilities.
Finally, after years of hard work and dedication, Ifeoma Bibiana Okoli made history. She earned her PhD in Special Education at the University of Ibadan, becoming the first visually impaired PhD holder in her state of origin, Anambra, as well as the first blind woman to achieve this remarkable feat at her university.
