Nigerian Teenager Honored with British Council Outstanding Cambridge Learner’s Award

A 17-year-old Nigerian girl named Mmesoma Okonkwo has been awarded the British Council Outstanding Cambridge Learner’s Award for her exceptional performance in the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. Mmesoma, a student of Chrisland High School in Lagos, emerged as the overall best student in the World Cambridge examinations.

Mmesoma’s outstanding achievement in English as a Second Language earned her the prestigious award. She was also awarded alongside one of her classmates who excelled in the Law subject. In an interview with Punch, Mmesoma expressed her gratitude to her teachers and the school for their immense support and guidance.

She acknowledged the efforts of her teachers who provided them with focused areas of study to prepare for the examinations. Mmesoma also credited the school environment, where the results of previous successful students were displayed, as a motivating factor for her success.

Mmesoma’s primary focus during the exams was not winning any prize but doing her best to make her school and family proud. The news of her success was initially kept a secret by her supervisor until the award ceremony. She was pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed with joy when she received the British Council Outstanding Cambridge Learner’s Award.

Looking ahead, Mmesoma aspires to pursue her higher education in both the United Kingdom and the United States. She plans to leverage this recognition to open doors for herself and continue her pursuit of education. With a strong passion and skill for business management, Mmesoma aims to study Business Administration in university.
