President Paul Kagame’s son joins elite presidential guard

Ian Kagame

President Paul Kagame’s son, Second Lieutenant Ian Kagame has been enrolled into the Rwandan Defense Force Presidential Guard after military training in the UK.

Ian Kagame, the son of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, joined the army after graduation from the Royal Military Academy, UK and has since been enlisted in the Rwanda Defense Forces Presidential Guard.

Ian made his first public appearance while beginning his new job at the annual National Prayer Breakfast on Sunday. Social media users shared images of Ian standing next to other soldiers of the Rwanda Defense Forces.

At a graduation ceremony held at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, United Kingdom, in August of last year, Ian was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. In 2021, he enrolled in college. The ceremony was attended by President Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Nyiramongi Kagame.

As the third-born son and a highly trained officer, Ian is charged with guaranteeing the safety of the nation’s highest-ranking officials.

Many have speculated that he may be following in the footsteps of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Museveni, who formerly served in the Special Forces Command (SFC), an elite force comparable to the Presidential Guard in the RDF.

Prior to being promoted to Commander of Land Forces, Muhoozi held the position of commander in the SFC from 2008 to 2017 and once again from December 2020 to 2021.
