Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy wins The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper

History has been made! Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy has just won The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award, becoming the first African goalkeeper in history to win the prestigious award. He beat Gianluigi Donnarumma and Manuel Neuer.

Last season, Mendy became the first African goalkeeper to appear in a European Cup final since 1985 when he started for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League 2020-21, and later went on to win the trophy beating Premier League rivals Manchester City. The goalkeeper has made impressive stats since he signed for the North London club Chelsea for £22 million from Ligue 1 side Rennes in 2020. Mendy has firmly established himself in Chelsea’s XI keeping 24 premier league clean sheets in 54 matches.

Mendy’s Champions League heroics last season were historical. The goalkeeper kept nine clean sheets for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League last season, the most ever by a goalkeeper in their debut campaign in the competition.

The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award is given to the most outstanding goalkeeper in men’s football as voted for by an international jury comprising the current coaches of all men’s national teams (one per team), current captains of all men’s national teams (one per team), one specialist journalist from each territory represented by a national team and fans registered on FIFA.com
