Top 10 Strongest Militaries In Africa 2025

Global Firepower has released the top 10 strongest militaries in Africa 2025. Africa’s military growth in 2025 continues to reflect significant differences in manpower, defense spending and force projection capacity, according to the latest rankings.

The index evaluates military strength using more than 60 indicators, including personnel levels, aircraft, armoured assets, logistics and defence budgets, to produce a comparative Power Index score.

Here are the top 10 strongest-ranked African militaries in 2025, with estimated figures for personnel, aircraft and fighter jets.

1. Egypt

Egypt remains Africa’s highest-ranked military, supported by large manpower reserves and the continent’s most extensive air and naval capabilities.

  • Military personnel: ~1.22 million
  • Aircraft: 1,080 Fighter jets
  • Fighter jets: 240
  • Defense budget: $5.88 billion

2. Algeria

Algeria retains its position as one of Africa’s strongest militaries, driven by high defence spending and modernised equipment.

  • Military personnel: ~520,000
  • Aircraft: ~610
  • Fighter jets: ~105
  • Defence budget: ~$25.0 billion

3. Nigeria

Nigeria remains West Africa’s most powerful military, with strength rooted primarily in manpower and internal security operations.

  • Military personnel: ~330,000
  • Aircraft: ~210
  • Fighter jets: ~15
  • Defence budget: ~$3.16bn

4. South Africa

South Africa’s military is smaller in size but characterised by professional training and advanced defence industry support.

5. Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s ranking reflects its large ground forces and emphasis on land-based military capability.

6. Angola

Angola continues to invest in gradual military modernisation, particularly in land forces.

7. Morocco

Morocco maintains a well-equipped military supported by consistent defence spending and modernisation programmes.

The DRC’s position is largely based on its population size and mobilisation potential.

Sudan maintains a sizeable military with an emphasis on ground forces.

Libya’s military ranking reflects a combination of legacy equipment and available manpower.
