Global Firepower has released the top 10 strongest militaries in Africa 2025. Africa’s military growth in 2025 continues to reflect significant differences in manpower, defense spending and force projection capacity, according to the latest rankings.
The index evaluates military strength using more than 60 indicators, including personnel levels, aircraft, armoured assets, logistics and defence budgets, to produce a comparative Power Index score.
Here are the top 10 strongest-ranked African militaries in 2025, with estimated figures for personnel, aircraft and fighter jets.
1. Egypt
Egypt remains Africa’s highest-ranked military, supported by large manpower reserves and the continent’s most extensive air and naval capabilities.

2. Algeria
Algeria retains its position as one of Africa’s strongest militaries, driven by high defence spending and modernised equipment.

Nigeria remains West Africa’s most powerful military, with strength rooted primarily in manpower and internal security operations.
