Aliko Dangote to Build $162 Million Sugar Refinery in Ghana

Dangote Group, led by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has announced plans to invest $162 million in the establishment of a state-of-the-art sugar refinery in Ghana.

The facility will process 12,000 tons of sugarcane daily, supported by a 25,000-hectare plantation, and produce by-products such as molasses and ethanol

In a LinkedIn post, Dangote Group described the project as more than just a factory, calling it “a catalyst for self-sufficiency, employment, and continental transformation.”

According to Africa Briefing, Dangote Group has already identified the location of where the refinery will be built and agreements are in the pipeline.

Ghana has long been dependent on sugar imports to meet its growing demand. According to government data, Ghana currently spends around $162 million annually on sugar imports.

Currently, Dangote Group owns the largest sugar refinery in sub-Saharan Africa, located in Numan, Adamawa State, Nigeria.
