Ghana: New oil refinery in Tema to open in August

Tema

A new oil refinery facility worth US$1.98 billion is set to begin operations in Tema, Ghana by the end of August this year.

The refinery, owned by the Sentuo Group, aims to produce various petroleum products, including liquified petroleum gas (LPG), jet fuel, gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil, with an expected output of five million metric tonnes.

Recently, Ghana’s Minister of Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, visited the facility and confirmed that the Sentuo Group is in talks with the Ministry of Energy to secure 500,000 barrels of crude oil from Ghana’s oil fields for its initial production.

The Sentuo Group has ambitious plans for the refinery to refine 4.26 million tonnes of high-quality petroleum products such as gasoline, kerosene, and diesel that exceed the Euro iv standard by 2025.

In addition to the petroleum products, the refinery aims to produce 350,000 tonnes of various pitch products, 200,000 tonnes of lubricating base oil and solvent naphtha, and 400,000 tonnes of by-products, including polypropylene, ammonium sulphate, sulfuric acid, and sulphur.

Ghana, known for being one of Africa’s rapidly growing hydrocarbon markets, aims to double its production by the end of 2023.
