Tobi Amusan, a Nigerian who holds the world record in the 100-meter hurdles, is ranked as the fifth-best female athlete in 2022 by World Athletics.
Using the athletics scoring tables, the World Athletics assigned points to each athlete based on how well they performed throughout the season.
The 25-year-old hurdler had an outstanding year and became the first Nigerian woman to win a world championship in an athletics event when she won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles at the 2022 World Championships. In the semifinal, she set the current world record of 12.12 seconds, which she then lowered to 12.06 in the final.
Additionally, she won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham before defending her title in the Diamond League in Zurich with a new meet-record time of 12.29 seconds. Gail Devers, a national treasure in the United States, held the previous record, which was valid for 22 years.
Amusan’s performance at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon, America, set a new women’s 100-meter hurdles world record, which was just confirmed by the World Athletics.
Amusan was one of the five athletes that reached the shortlist for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year Award. The list is headed by Sharicka Jackson, a fellow countrywoman, and sprints icon from Jamaica, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. The triple jump queen of Venezuela, Yulimar Rojas, is in third place, and Sydney McLaughlin of the United States is in fourth.
Femke Bol, a 400-meter hurdler from the Netherlands, is rated sixth, followed by Gudaf Tsegay, an Ethiopian runner, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, a high jumper from Ukraine, Faith Kipyegon, a shot put thrower from Kenya, and Chase Ealey, an American.
